Description

The 4th November 2021 Aurora Australis viewed from Grossard Point, Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia, looking southwest towards the main entrance to Western Port Bay. Sweep of lights from the Round Island Beacon at the Nobbies on Phillip Island, west past several vessels and marker buoys to Flinders on the southwest corner of the Mornington Peninsula.

The transition from green to pink to violet aurora with altitude can be seen. Later in the night as the aurora approached, the green aurora expanded in area. The orange-illuminated cloud may be the Na-vapor lights at the Penguin Parade parking area. It was a surreal night, and like 4 nights prior at Pyramid Point, again the staccato cries of the Fairy Penguins in the bushes around Ventnor Bay (south side) could be heard.

The core of the Milky Way hangs pregnant over the Southern Ocean and is bathed in the green/yellow, pink and violet hues of the Aurora Australis. Venus, which is currently transiting Sagittarius, is so bright that it casts a moon-like reflection across Western Port Bay.

A night to remember.
